Holiday Gift Guide – Elvis Costello

Posted in Daytime by wersmusic on December 15, 2009

The 38th album of the WERS Holiday Gift Guide List, Secret Profane & Sugarcane, comes from the one and only Elvis Costello. The album was released this past June and on it, Costello returned to his classic acoustic band-set up for the first time since his 1986 record, King of America. The acoustic set up really adds a new element to Secret Profane & Sugarcane and gives it an overall bluesy feel. Costello recorded Secret in just 3 days in Nashville, TN with producer T. Bone Burnett, who has also worked with Black Rebel Motorcylce Club and the Counting Crows. This album marks the 29th release from Costello and we’re sure it won’t be his last!

Holiday Gift Guide – Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles

Posted in Daytime by wersmusic on December 14, 2009

The third album, entitled The Stars Are Out, from local group Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles appears at #48 on the WERS Holiday Gift Guide list.  This is an incredible release from Sarah, the singer from Taunton, MA (and Emerson College alumna!) as this album best showcases her powerful voice and her energetic rock and roll sound.  Definitely the best collection of Sarah’s original work yet, it also features covers from five different artists ranging from Smokey Robinson to the Lemonheads.  However, hands down, the WERS favorite is the leading track off the album, “Do It For Free.”

If you’re looking to give the gift of local music this holiday season, you will surely impress your family and friends with this album AND make sure to check back here each day this week for more Holiday Gift Guide album highlights.  We’ll be sure to leave you with lots of ideas when it comes time to do all your shopping!

The Swedish band, the Shout Out Louds, have announced they will be releasing a brand new album, entitled Work, this coming February!  They’ve been recording the album in Seattle with Phil Ek, who has also worked with other WERS artists such as Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, and The Shins, so I think it’s safe to say that we can expect some great things from their new album.  We have a taste of what you can expect from Work, so below, find some in-studio footage of the Shout Out Louds recording their new single, “Walls,” and if you like what you hear, download the song for free off of their website!

Florence + The Machine

Posted in Daytime by wersmusic on December 6, 2009

You might have recently been hearing the powerful sounds of Florence + The Machine, a British group led by Florence Welch, who resides in London.  The band’s debut album, Lungs was released this past summer and in its first 5 weeks of release it was number 2 on the charts, just one slot behind Michael Jackson.  This is a pretty amazing feat if you ask me.  And where did the name come from?  Florence Welch states that when she first began playing shows, she was billing herself as “Florence Robot is a Machine.”  This name began to garner lots of interest, most likely due to it’s originality and also because Florence has an incredible voice that stays with you for a while in your head once you’ve heard it.  Feeling that this name was too long however, the band changed it to what we know them as today.  They’ve recently released a music video for their newest single off of Lungs, “You’ve Got the Love.” Enjoy it below!

New Vampire Weekend

Posted in Daytime by wersmusic on November 24, 2009

The New York-based indie rockers, Vampire Weekend are set to release a new album called Contra in January!  With their first album clearly being a huge hit, I think we are all expecting big things from Contra.  They’ve made a video, which you can watch below, for their new single “Cousins.” Seems like VP is back to their old tricks of fusing catchy beats with Afro-pop.  Do you think this new album will live up to the hype?  We’re sure excited to see!
