Hey, Where’s the Throwback?
So, while eating lunch this afternoon and of course checking the WERS music blog for all the latest and hippest music news. It dawned on us that we totally forgot to do the Throwback this week! Our bad. Looks like someone on the music staff dropped the ball this week *cough, Rosenfeld, cough*
Please forgive us. We know you depend on our weekly trips down memory lane to get you through the tough work week. So in repentance, we’re offering not one but two throwbacks.
The first comes from a WERS staple, The Grateful Dead. Why? Well, because its bassist and founding member, Bob Weir’s birthday, and also we just like this song. It’s the 1980 performance of Ramble On Rose live at Radio City Music Hall. Check it out:
And in an additional effort to quell you’re blind rage over our forgetfulness, here’s a clip from another birthday boy’s band. Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, turns 47 today! What better way to celebrate then featuring his band as a Throwback. Here’s the band performing Zephy Song from their 2002, album By The Way:
Enjoy these videos and the weekend! We promise we’ll be more on point next week.
Throwback Thursday
For this week’s throwback we decided to feature folk rock legend, Neil Young. The upcoming release of his long-anticipated box-set Archives Vol.1 1963-1972, which encapsulates hit singles, concert footage, un-released tracks, and lots more from the first decade or so of Young’s career, has created quite a bit of buzz lately about the Canadian crooner and his unique brand of confessional folk rock. Our clip this week is a cut off Young’s 1972 album Harvest, entitled The Needle and the Damage Done, which is also featured in the set. If you’re not ready to spring for the super-pricey box-set just yet, hopefully this live performance of the song from the Johnny Cash Show will hold you over. Enjoy!
Throwback Thursday
In this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday we bring you Stevie Wonder getting down and funky in his rendition of The Temptations hit “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”. Way before T-Pain, Stevie Wonder was at it first. Check it out as he uses the talkbox to create, dare I say, the original remix.
You Can Be A Wesley: The Myth, The Band
Photos of You Can A Wesley at WERS during Local Music Week. (Corrinna Duemler/WERS)
By Amanda Agueda
When I first heard about You Can Be a Wesley, the story of what a “Wesley” is intrigued me. “The Entity known as Wesley roamed the universe before it was a universe, spreading his essence throughout an eternity without substance,” says the band’s MySpace. “Eventually he got bored, and created what is now known as the Big Bang.” Wesley, the story goes, called to lead-singer and guitarist Saara to find three other Wesleys: three whom could extend his powers through music.
This elaborate and endearingly bogus story may pitch the band a bit high. But the imaginative tale has some truth to it. You Can Be A Wesley indeed has the necessary “powers” to make waves in the Boston music scene.
The band’s live in-studio performance on WERS was full of excitement. They talked about favorite colors, their forthcoming album, and feel good indie rock from Allston. Their set started with their latest single “Creatures.” Saara said You Can Be A Wesley’s sound has changed since their last visit to the station. “If you listen to stuff on our EP and to what’s coming out on this album, it’s a lot harder and more rock and roll,” she said.
The next song performed was “Wildlife,” followed by news about their upcoming album. This yet-to-be-titled album (though Nick said they are thinking about naming it after their production studio) was recorded last summer and is set for release this June. Perfect timing for a band who will graduate from Boston University this year.
The final song You Can Be A Wesley performed was “Summerhomes,” an old song off of their last album. It left everyone in the studio certain they had just seen another band that will surely impact the Boston music scene, which is what You Can Be a Wesley is out to do.
You can see the band at a handful of shows they will play in Greater Boston throughout April and May, and they are planning a tour throughout the Midwest and East Coast following their album’s release.
How Do You Do?
WERS wants to give credit to where credit is due. The Local Music Week graphic that we had up in the last post was created with help from Worldle.net. We mention it because we think it’s one of those fun and ubiquitous internet tools that you can personalize to your own satisfaction. If you don’t know about it yet, we’d love to be the people to introduce it to you! Everything you make on it is free and yours to use because the application is licensed under a Creative Commons attribution license. I’ve honestly played on this thing for hours on end.
Here’s another example of a runner-up LMW graphic. I feel like such a designer.

Pete Yorn – Your Own Worst Enemy (Springsteen Cover!)
Pete Yorn has been aligning himself with just the right people in 2009. First, news comes that he’s working with the legendary Frank Black on a new EP. Then there goes Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes producing his new album.
Now Pete is on Bruce Springsteen‘s good side with this cover of “Your Own Worst Enemy” from the 2007 album Magic. Who wouldn’t want to be on the BOSS’ good side??
Check out the well done video below or at http://www.brucespringsteen.net/news/hanginout.html
PS – Bruce Springsteen has a whole page dedicated to people covering his songs, how baller is that?
