Shir Madness @ WERS
Sunday, 9AM
Shalom! Shir Madness brings in an upbeat and comfortable energy this morning live in the WERS mixing studio. The local Jewish band were appropriately traditional with their fun and joking attitudes, including a rather profane punchline about an incompetent golfer not being able to get his putz into the hole. We laugh as we hand over the radio agreement contract, to which the only question was “can we say ‘shtoop’ on air?”
As for the music, we had a diverse mix of quick paced meddelies and slower tunes, all in keeping of the European klesmer tradition. Listeners of Chagigah (our Jewish and Israeli show on Sunday mornings) were sure to enjoy the music and lead singer Gary Abramson’s testament to Jewish culture: “I grew up with a grandmother who only spoke in Yiddish to me, so this band to me was inspired by her and is way to preserve our culture.”
The band of 8 musicians played 3 songs for us this morning, and explained to us their origin as a gig band, playing for celebrations and eventually Bar Mitzvahs.
You can catch Shir Madness at the Battle of the Klezmer Bands on December 11th at 7PM at Temple Aliyah in Needham, or learn more at Shirmadness.org

The quality of the mixing on this broadcast was excellent. I’m a groupy of these folks and I’ve never heard them sound better.
